Who doesn’t love hopping on a train and hearing the conductor call, “All aboard!”
For those visiting or living in Mendocino or Sacramento this spring, Mendocino Railway is offering fun seasonal adventures.
Mendocino Skunk Train: Mendocino Coast
Mendocino’s Skunk Train is a heritage railroad that has been operating both freight and passenger service since 1885. Initially used to move redwood logs to the Mendocino Coast sawmills from the rugged backcountry, the Skunk Train has become a beloved institution touted as one of the “10 Best Rail Tours in the Country” by USA Today, and a “Top 10 Family Activity in California” by National Geographic Traveler.
The Skunk Train journey covers 40 miles of scenic delights and 30 bridges, all while retaining its original charm—minus the historic, pungent aroma that once preceded its arrival. Operating year-round, this experience welcomes passengers to bring along their families and even their dog, ensuring a memorable and inclusive adventure.
I had the pleasure of riding the Skunk Train during my visit to Mendocino in late 2022 and it was an awesome and fun experience and blast into the past.
Guests can climb aboard for year-round excursions and special holiday journeys. From March 29 to March 31, 2024 (Easter weekend), the Skunk Train is inviting families to embark on a memorable springtime adventure aboard the enchanting Easter Express. Set amidst the picturesque landscapes of Willits, CA, this delightful celebration promises a host of treats, surprises, and cherished moments for all ages.
The two-hour excursion will travel through Tunnel #2, taking in the breathtaking scenery while reveling in the spirit of Easter. As you journey through the stunning countryside, be on the lookout for special Easter Egg surprises hidden along the route, adding an element of excitement to the experience.
“Our goal with the Easter Express is to create a magical and memorable celebration for families,” Stathi Pappas, General Manager at the Skunk Train, said. “We want to provide an opportunity for guests to not only enjoy the beauty of springtime but also create cherished memories with their loved ones.”
Guests can anticipate a variety of festive activities, including a visit from the Easter Bunny, who will be spreading joy and cheer throughout the train ride. Indulge in tasty Easter treats and refreshing pink lemonade, adding to the festive ambiance of the journey.
Tickets for this special event are priced at $64.95 for standard fare, with infants in lap riding for free and dogs welcome for an additional fee of $10.95, and can be purchased online.
River Fox Train: Sacramento

Built in 1911 by the Northern Electric Company, the River Fox Train’s 10-mile track originally transported passengers in the Sacramento area. Electric passenger travel ended in 1941, but the line remained active with diesel freight, creating a link between the fertile farmlands of the Sacramento Valley and the rest of California.
In 2003, Sierra Railroad merged with the Yolo Shortline, continuing freight and reviving passenger trains under the name of Sacramento River Train. Today, the line is known as the River Fox Train, a sister of the world-famous Skunk Train.
From events like Railbike rides, relaxing beer and wine trains and holiday-themed outings, passengers can enjoy activities while reveling in nostalgic railroad charm.
From March 17 to April 14, 2024, the River Fox Train invites families to celebrate the arrival of spring with the Easter Egg Express, a delightful adventure for all ages.
The springtime extravaganza guarantees an unforgettable experience for the whole family on a whimsical train ride accompanied by the gentle rhythm of the rails as young adventurers partake in an exciting Easter egg hunt, searching high and low for these holiday hidden treasures.
Mouthwatering snacks are available for purchase on the train, from chips to candy and refreshing drinks. For heartier meals, guests can visit the River Fox Café at Elkhorn Station Park. Adults can enjoy beverages both onboard and, in the park, adding extra fun to the journey. Exclusive access to the private park offers serene surroundings for family activities, promising laughter and lasting memories.
Of course, no springtime celebration would be complete without a visit from the star of the season – the Easter Bunny himself! Be sure to keep an eye out for this special, fluffy hare as he makes his
rounds, spreading joy and cheer to all aboard the Easter Egg Express.
The Easter fun continues through April 14, with ongoing Easter bunny sightings and egg
hunts to embrace the spirit of spring.
Tickets for this enchanting experience can be booked here, with standard tickets for ages 3 and
above priced at $59.95. Infants ages 2 and under can join the adventure for just $10.95.
