Far Homes, the service making it easier for people to purchase homes internationally, shared the news that Cozumel has been awarded the designation of ‘Pueblo Magico’ or Magical Town, making it the fourth destination in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo along with Bacalar, Isla Mujeres, and Tulum, to receive this recognition.
In February, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, conducted a tour of the state of Quintana Roo with the local governor, Mara Lezama Espinosa, to officially recognize Cozumel and the other existing Pueblos Magicos of the region.
Espinosa indicated that Cozumel is a well-deserved recognition of the “land of the swallows,” which is known for its natural beauty, stunning coral reefs, beautiful white sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters, as well as its national parks, and pre-Hispanic constructions, among the many other attractions that make it such a unique and magical place.
A Pueblo Mágico, or Magical Town, is a designation given by the Mexican government to towns or villages that possess significant cultural, historical, or natural value. These towns are recognized for their unique charm, traditional architecture, rich cultural heritage, and distinctive local traditions. The Pueblo Mágico program aims to promote tourism and economic development in these areas by preserving their cultural identity and offering visitors authentic Mexican experiences.
To attain Magical Town status, a town must have a population exceeding 20,000, be situated within 124 miles of a prominent tourist hub, maintain a tourism development initiative for a minimum of three years, ensure the safety and well-being of visitors, and offer distinctive symbolic or cultural attractions. Last year over 100 cities were nominated for Magical Town status but only 45 were selected.
“We’ve been seeing increased interest for many destinations accessible from Cancun, and in particular, a surge of people seeking refuge from the ordinary,” Far Homes CEO Chet Kittleson said. “With its stunning natural beauty and echoes of ancient civilizations, it’s no surprise that Cozumel is being recognized as a Pueblo Magico.”
Thanks to its newly minted Magical Town status, Cozumel will receive governmental funds to aid in the promotion of tourism. These tourism investment funds are typically used to revive historic architecture, fund new art installations, increase marketing budgets, and build new, modern visitor centers in Magical Towns. Travelers to Pueblos Mágicos can expect to encounter picturesque streets, vibrant markets, historical landmarks, and opportunities to immerse themselves in the local culture, making for unforgettable and enchanting experiences for years to come.
In addition to enhancing the tourist experience, Quintana Roo is also prioritizing the safety and convenience of travelers with the deployment of Green Angels, or Ángeles Verdes, to Cozumel. These assistance teams will provide aid and support to tourists navigating the state’s most popular thoroughfares, offering roadside assistance and directions to popular destinations in English and Spanish.
