Often just referred to as “Paso,” Paso Robles is a charming town in San Luis Obispo County on California’s Central Coast. The city is known for its rolling hills and vineyards, scenic landscapes, small-town atmosphere, and world class wines.
Paso Robles is one of California’s most dynamic wine regions. Once a well-kept secret, the area has now found its place on the top tier of California wine regions, beloved for its more than 200 wineries and extensive vineyards dotting the agricultural landscape growing over 40 grape varietals.
While impressive wines are easy to come by here, wineries that offer spectacular views make the wine tasting experience even more special. Here are some of my favorite Paso Robles wineries (and places I am always happy to bring friends and family visiting from out of town) as they each hold something unique.
DAOU Vineyards
Sporting one of the most iconic hilltop viewpoints at 2,200-feet elevation in Paso Robles, the winery offers a Mediterranean elevated tasting room with awe-inspiring panoramic vistas across rolling hills, valleys and vineyards that seem to go on forever, and even toward the coast in the distance.
Specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals, the wines match the stellar hospitality and unforgettable views, especially at sunset.
Calcareous Vineyard
Peachy Canyon Road is undeniably one of the most picturesque and winding roads in all of Paso Robles. Perched high atop a hill with incredible views, Calcareous sits on a limestone plateau with broad east, south and north vistas, most awe-inspiring when the sun sets behind the rolling hills. The expansive property is perfect for picnics or dining on the outdoor patio and wine sipping.
Calcareous’ portfolio spans both Rhone-style blends and classic Bordeaux-heritage varietals with a wide range of impressive expressions.
JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery
There’s a special vibe about this property founded in 1981 by Justin Baldwin with a vision to make world-class Bordeaux-inspired blends in Paso Robles. The estate focuses on combining Old World traditions with New World techniques for quality winemaking. It’s a bit of a drive away from downtown Paso Robles, but oh, is it worth it.
Blending modern design with countryside charm that includes renovated wine caves, the property reflects JUSTIN’s farm-to-table philosophy with ingredients sourced from its onsite garden, orchard, and apiary.
The winery stands alone as the only Central Coast estate that offers the luxury trifecta of world-class wines, five-star accommodations and MICHELIN-star dining all in one place wrapped in amazing panoramic vineyard views.
Opolo Vineyards
Offering a lovely setting in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles distinguished for its rolling hills, vineyard rows, and cooling ocean breezes, the winery is known for its vineyard-lined drive and grounds offering a classic Central Coast winery setting, and a relaxed ambience for sipping wine on a warm afternoon.
Wines here are impressive, both white, rose and reds, along with blends and reserves and wine servers are very knowledgeable. If you’re into pizza, the patio serves great options, all cooked in an outdoor pizza oven.
Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden
A plum tree-lined entrance and ornate gates lead to a magical world inside the grounds of Sculpterra Winery. The wines are impressive, but no less impressive than the artwork that covers the grounds of the property that include a 10-foot bronze mermaid, granite puma and 16-foot-tall bronze chancing horse by world-renowned sculptor John Jagger.
Long-time resident and master blacksmith/iron worker Robert Bentley’s ornate touches can be viewed both inside and outside the tasting room, from the baroque awning at the entry way to the old-world chandeliers on the ceiling above the tasting area.
Le Cuvier Winery and Tasting Room
Le Cuvier was founded in 1983 by Paso Robles wine pioneer John Munch, making it one of the earlier wineries in the region. The name is French for “the little barrel room,” a nod to its focus on traditional barrel-aged winemaking.
The winery is situated on a hilltop above the Salinas River basin and just west of downtown Paso Robles in a scenic setting offering stunning views over the surrounding vineyards and countryside. The outside tasting patio and indoor large windows let visitors enjoy the views alongside their flights and pairings.
Villa San Juliette
Villa San Juliette is located in San Miguel, a mere stone’s throw from Paso Robles. The Tuscan-inspired vineyard estate and boutique winery sits on a 130-acre property with estate-grown and handcrafted wines.
The setting is inspired by Old-World Tuscan architecture with manicured gardens, fountains, and awe-inspiring panoramic vineyard views that add to the relaxed, romantic atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy flight tastings, or individual glasses or bottles of wine accompanied by amazing seasonal culinary delights from charcuterie and salads to heartier entrees.
