Located in the private luxury development of Kanai on the enchanting Riviera Maya, Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection, which translates to “ethereal,” floats over a forest of lush mangroves facing the white sand beaches of the Caribbean. This region is one of my favorites, and I couldn’t be more excited to hear that the Auberge collection opened a new resort here where modern design meets Mexican tradition.

Culinary tourism has boomed in recent years according to Research and Markets, topping $805.9 billion globally as travelers are becoming more interested in immersing themselves local cultures through food.

In fact, food has become a significant factor in deciding travel destinations, from street food to fine dining. Research shows that 69% of millennials prioritize food experiences when traveling compared to other groups. Though I’m not a millennial, I can guarantee that food is also at the top of my list when selecting a destination.

After all, you have to taste a culture to understand it best.

The late renowned celebrity chef and travel documentarian Anthony Bourdain wisely said, “I think food, culture people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.”

The three new chef-led culinary adventures at Etéreo’s Yucatan paradise include:

Chili Journey

Guided by Chef Delfino, guests discover the earthy, sweet, and smoky flavors of 13 types of Mexican chilis, commonly used in traditional regional recipes. Chef Delfino shares the innate characteristics of both fresh and dried chilis as well as the proper approaches to cooking with these spice-filled ingredients.

Diners can explore the bright flavors, differing textures, and extreme heat levels of the chilis prepared alongside Mexican street food dishes and wine pairing.

Ceviche Culinary Workshop

Led beachfront by Chef Hans, guests will embark on a Latin American epicurean journey celebrating simple and beautiful ceviche, a Peruvian dish incorporating fresh fish and shellfish caught daily marinated in citrus.

From the sea to the table, food lovers will learn all the traditional techniques and sustainable practices in between creating their own delightfully bright ceviche dish to inspire the palette. The fresh ceviche can be enjoyed along with a signature Changarro cocktail in a private beach cabana. It doesn’t get any better than this!

Nixtamal Family Experience

In this chef-led experience, guests gather together for a lively cooking experience for the whole family that includes making your own corn tortillas on an ancient xamach, or comal, Mexico’s traditional hot cooking vessel.

You’ll discover the rich and important history of Mexico and the traditional nixtamal process from how to ground corn to mixing different types to create unique flavors and textures. Enjoy an assortment of Mexican corn and prepare personalized antojitos (street snacks) featuring local Yucatan ingredients.

When you’re ready for your next adventure, consider Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection Mexico’s Riviera Maya where the spirit of Mayan tradition is embraced and celebrated.
