Conjunto is alive and well in San Antonio, where people travel internationally to attend the annual Tejano Conjunto Festival, the first and longest-running Conjunto festival in the country.
Conjunto originated more than a century ago when Texans of Mexican heritage (Tejanos) took an interest in the accordion music of German, Polish, and Czech immigrants. What formed was a uniquely American musical genre, indigenous to South and Central Texas.
Aside from Conjunto music, this blending of cultures permeates San Antonio’s food, culture, and arts. Each year, more than 10,000 people attend the Tejano Conjunto Festival to dance, celebrate, and listen to the genre’s best performers.
This year marks the 42nd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio. It takes place on May 15-19, 2024. This year’s events will be held at Rosedale Park (303 Dartmouth St) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9186 (650 VFW Blvd).
The lineup of events includes performances from living legends, rising bands, and heritage award winners, as well as a traditional seniors dance, and Hall of Fame induction ceremony and presentations.
“Who we are as a people is best captured in our music, art, and culture,” Cristina Ballí, Executive Director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center which presents the Conjunto Festival annually, said. “Creating an annual home for Conjunto to come alive and be shared tells our stories and shares our traditions.”
