California is packed full of artistic energy, from coastal enclaves to desert hideaways. Art lovers can explore areas ranging from the sun-kissed beaches of Southern California to the misty bluffs of the Northern Coast and the state’s inspiring mountain landscapes. Bottom line is, we have it all here.
Add in California’s blend of natural beauty, cultural openness, and a longstanding tradition of creativity, and it’s not hard to find destinations that offer galleries, public art, festivals and unique local flavor art aficionados embrace.
As a California resident, here are my favorite art towns located throughout the state.
Carmel-by-the-Sea
One of the most beautiful collaborations between man and nature has to be the seaside bohemian artist village of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
What began as an artist colony that lured the likes of Sinclair Lewis, Robert Louis Stevenson and Ansel Adams with incredible scenic beauty, the quaint collection of fairy-tale architecture with whimsical thatched-roof cottages, artsy boutiques and storybook restaurants give Carmel a distinctive flavor unlike any other West Coast town.
Carmel-by-the-Sea sports nearly 100 galleries in a one-square mile easily walkable village, one of the highest gallery concentrations in the U.S. There are 21 artist-owned galleries, where the proprietors actually work on site.
Idyllwild
I call this idyllic mountain village “art and nature flowing in perfect harmony.”
Set among tall, fragrant pines and sweet-smelling cedars of the San Jacinto Mountains in Southern California, Idyllwild beckons those to a simple place where mountain meets art. And because it’s off the travel grid, a visit here is soothing respite from the sometimes-chaotic modern living.
Voted as one of the “100 Best Small Art Towns of America” in a book by John Villani with the same title, the small town proudly boasts more than 15 art galleries featuring works by local artists. Idyllwild is also home to the world-renowned Idyllwild Arts Academy, a boarding school for high school students interested in a variety of different arts.
Laguna Beach
This one one of the most iconic and enduring art towns in California — if not the entire U.S.
With its dramatic coastal cliffs, artist colony roots, and world-famous festivals, Laguna Beach has cultivated a thriving, high-quality, and deeply embedded art culture for over a century. The town itself is essentially built around the arts — from gallery-lined streets to artist co-ops and cultural centers. Nearly 100 galleries and working studios are located within a compact, walkable downtown area just steps from the ocean.
The bohemian Festival of the Arts and Sawdust Film Festival are the town’s top art events. But it’s the Pageant of the Masters, a one-of-a-kind performance where actors recreate famous works of art as “living pictures” that is legendary.
La Jolla
The city of San Diego is filled with artistic expression, but it’s the coastal community of La Jolla, known as a “Jewel by the Sea,” that’s one of the best small-town for artists and a fusion of the au naturel and magnificent art scene. Sunsets here are a treasure of their own.
The La Jolla Art Gallery district boasts over 25 galleries, featuring contemporary, fine art and photography along with sculpture installations, cutting edge exhibitions and innovative performances. The First Friday Art Walk held on the first Friday of every month allures art lovers and where galleries stay open late, along with host pop-up artists and live music.
The La Jolla Playhouse is an award-winning theater established in 1947, known for its development of new plays and musicals that are tested here, and often move to Broadway.
Mendocino
Remote and wildly beautiful, Mendocino has inspired artists for over half a century. The quietly stunning art town is perched on rugged cliffs along the state’s northern coast and is a piece of art within itself.
With its wind-swept beauty and Victorian charm, Mendocino offers a magical blend of natural inspiration, and creative expression. It’s not just picturesque —it’s profoundly artistic. The haven for painters, potters, photographers, fiber artists and writers is inspired by its foggy mornings, intense crashing waves, redwood forests and clapboard cottages.
Ojai
Set in a stunning, peaceful valley in Ventura County, Ojai sports a deeply artistic and mystical vibe where artists are drawn to its light, serenity and community spirit.
Bohemian, spiritual and grounded in nature, Ojai has been a magnet for painters, potters, musicians, writers and new-age thinkers and as a result, the town has a strong emphasis on handcrafted, mindful and locally made art. Its yoga studios, organic farms, hot springs and crystal shops are interwoven into the local culture, often alongside art spaces. And one of its most dramatic scenes occurs at sunset during the famed “Pink Moment,” when the mountains glow rosy-pink.
Sebastopol
Sonoma’s lush wine country meets reclaimed art in this funky, cool, and eclectic town. Known for its quirky art and sculptures made from scrap and junk, Sebastopol is one of California’s most delightfully offbeat and artistic small communities.
With deep agricultural roots and a fiercely independent spirit, the town has evolved into a haven for artists, makers, musicians and creatives who value sustainability, authenticity, and yes, with a little weirdness on the side. Art is everywhere, on walls, gardens and along roadsides, all blending with its organic farms, herbal apothecaries and cooperatives.
The Sebastopol Center for the Arts is so impressive while honoring diversity, encouraging creative excellence and showcasing local creatives.
Ukiah
Nestled in Mendocino County about 110 miles north of San Francisco along Highway 101, Ukiah is a charming small city known for its scenic valley setting, rich history and vibrant local culture. The distinctive Northern California gem is historically rich, agriculturally vibrant and naturally picturesque.
It melds small-town warmth with cultural depth, all while offering easy access to redwoods, hot springs and award-winning wineries. Artistic charm runs deep in a town rooted in a mix of Native American heritage, thriving local arts scene and the kind of soulful creativity that often flourishes in quiet, nature-surrounded communities.
