You know spring is in the air when the annual Elora antiques and vintage show arrives.
Treasure hunters agree, there’s a genuine anticipation in looking for the perfect gem. Thirty top dealers converge in the Jefferson Elora Community Centre (Canada) to display antiques and collectables ranging from Vintage collectables to furniture.
The Elora antiques and vintage show is a great place to spend an enjoyable time wandering through the booths and then exploring the lovely village.
Elora is located approximately 1.5 hours northwest of Toronto, making it a desired day-trip destination. From Toronto, take Highway 401 West, exit north onto Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) in Guelph. Follow signs for Elora/Fergus, merging onto County Road 7.
Dealers Antiques and Vintage Specialities
As the Elora show attracts numerous dealers and collectors the centre is a hub of activity. Here are some of the specialities that enticed me in for a closer look.
Abel Land, Plantation Antiques
A resource for jewelry, boxes, ivory, art glass, silver smalls, ephemera and collectables.
Displayed in the glass cases along the back of the booth is a plethora of wonderfully small and enticing objects. Of note for me were the small lovely hand painted enamel boxes. These were used for a myriad of reasons, such as, holding snuff, creams, pomades, patches pills and rings. Some of these small French enamel boxes were over 200 years old, hand painted and not marked. I can see why these are collector’s items.
Judith Mureika and Julia Wright, Vintage J & J, Hamilton
On display were a variety of items, like a delicate antique fan from Italy that opens by pulling from the bottom to spread out in a fan shape.
Two items were brought specially to the show and are definitely worth the visit. From the late 18th century, a well-preserved powder horn once belonged to George Dawe of Ship Cove, Newfoundland.
The second speciality is a gorgeous 19th Century Mi’kmaq birch and quill basket from the East Coast. It’s approximately three inches across and in marvelous condition. I could see why this has been featured on the Antiques Road Show and why Judith sees herself as merely a custodian of items.
Artful Restorations, Lloy Osburn
Front and centre of this booth is a spectacular and unique picnic suitcase with a story of its own. This sturdy and well-crafted item was made in England and imported to Canada. In the 1920s it would have been stored in the backseat of a Model A or T Ford. The suitcase top is slanted where a person could rest their feet. Inside, porcelain plates and utensils are held in place with spring loaded hardware. While the salt is probably not original, everything else is, including the buckle to hold the plates. A picnic basket would have been used to carry the food. This luxurious item also contains a tea box, two thermoses, and a place for jams and jellies. It certainly made me wish for the bygone days of luxury picnics.
Find Your Own Treasure
Hunting for unique antique or vintage items carries with it the feel of nostalgia for that era. For many, these are hidden gems of the past. The more you ask, the more you learn from dealer experts about how to spot an authentic antique. Whether you’re hunting for that special something, or just looking, the fun is in the exploration.
Dealers are happy to share stories about their items. Listen and learn about the provenance and history. This is how I found my favourite gem; a glowing spectacular blue 1870s 2nd empire French enamel box, not marked, with an interior of brass.
What makes an antique standout is the quality craftmanship that differs from many newer items. These specialities tend to last longer and be sustainable. And of course, who doesn’t love the fun of a successful treasure hunt?

The Village of Elora is a community in the township of Centre Wellington, Ontario, Canada.
You’ll be awed by the loveliness of this small village. Take time to stroll along the downtown, featuring 19th century limestone architecture, small cafes, and boutique shops like the memorable Mermaid.
